ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ law students working to help eradicate modern slavery

The Sydney Archdiocesan Anti-Slavery Taskforce recently presented findings from its Domus 8.7 Index benchmarking of Modern Slavery Act Modern Slavery Statements on the public register. The Index contains data from 5,000 hours of reviews in relation to 1,500+ Modern Slavery Statements, including ACAN entities - the largest review of the first-year statements.

The reviews were carried out by more than 70 senior students from ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´'s Thomas More Law school. Students were offered internship placements with an opportunity to work alongside Alison Rahill and Carsten Primdal from the Anti-slavery Taskforce.

ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ Law students Adeline Kassis, Eve Van Rhine, Patrick Beer and Phoebe Straube presented summaries of their reviews into the modern slavery statements of four organisations from different industry sectors in a webinar on May 3.

Professor John McMillan AO, recently appointed to review the Modern Slavery Act, and Todd Kliendienst from Australian Borderforce, also outlined processes and procedures for the Modern Slavery Act Review during the webinar.

Mary Delahunty from Seven Advisory facilitated the webinar and provided important investor perspectives on actions being taken - or not undertaken – by MSA reporting entities.

This is important work that aligns with ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´’s mission to promote the dignity of every person to act for the common good and demonstrates our commitment to minimising the impacts of modern slavery.
