Aims

• Understand the perceptions and experiences of younger mothers (under 25) on early motherhood.
• Explore younger mothers¡¯ aspirations and the supports they utilise or need.
• Inform policies and programs to better support younger mothers in achieving their goals.

Background

Younger mothers often face stigma and socioeconomic barriers, impacting their wellbeing and access to resources. Research focusing on their perspectives is essential to address their needs effectively and improve policy and support services.

Project details

The study sought to provide a deeper understanding of the social, economic, and support dynamics affecting younger mothers and their children, promoting more inclusive and supportive service responses.

Method

• Semi-structured interviews with 35 younger mothers from varied locations.
• Three focus groups conducted in Canberra, with participants discussing barriers, stigma, and recommendations for service improvement.

Findings

• Many younger mothers viewed motherhood as valuable and reported pride in their role, despite feeling stigmatised.
• Key challenges included financial instability, limited access to housing, and mental health struggles.
• Recommendations included creating more accessible, non-judgmental support services, prioritising relationship assistance, and leveraging child health services to engage younger parents.
